let me tell you about my students....
[note: when i use the word "they" in this post, i'm referring to my "behavior problem" students]
they do not accept responsibility for their poor choices. one of the most frequent phrases i hear each day is "it wasn't me!" or "i didn't do anything!" (ick)
they are plain mean to each other. i cannot get them to stop saying nasty, hurtful things to one another.
they are defiant. they think the world revolves around them. they are lazy. they do not enjoy reading.
they make me absolutely crazy. today was a hard day.

kell you didnt talk to them in a fake way. all kids will buck and be nasty with teachers, new or old. none of my comments will really help your situation, but you are a good teacher. period. and hard days will be there, no doubt, and when they do come remember that i love you, and that i will see you in a week or two.
also, the only kind of suggestion i can make is to force them to laugh, make them silly if all else fails. at the least we will relieve tense moments or even make the miscreant seem silly him/herself
