i've got a city love

on my way into work this morning i saw a little girl walking to school. she had long dark hair in a slicked over side ponytail. she was tall and skinny, probably in 4th or 5th grade.

absolutely reminded me of zobeyda.

zobeyda was in my first student teaching class. she always wore her hair in a side ponytail. she had a gorgeous little face and a killer attitude. all the boys were mean to her because they secretly adored her. and i kinda adored her myself.

it's strange when i get little reminders of city teaching. i can get so caught up in the excitement and new-ness of this job that i forget my passion used to be urban education. who knows if that dream has been replaced or if it'll resurface in the near-or-distant future.

so totally random

i love lots of things about life lately. warm spring weather. the sun shining brightly. my students. getting to play with the cutie kids. making an "apple dapple cake" that turned out amazing. preparing for summer program when i work with kids full time!!! talking to my best friend before we go to sleep. getting ready for grandparents' weekend [VA and NC!] starting tomorrow!!!!! seeing 2 fab friends NEXT weekend!

there are also a couple things i don't love. my student telling me a story about some self-righteous punk in the grocery store saying "this is america. we speak english, not spanish." ick. makes my blood boil. waking up wicked tired and knowing i have a 12 hour day ahead before i can come home.

ok, thanks bye.

taboo teams

last night we played taboo with a bunch of friends. they wouldn't let melissa and i be on the same team. i ended up with two guys [usually, i would be thrilled with this but they are both engaged and apparently do not understand my incredibly clear taboo descriptions].
after one unfortunate round, the following dialogue took place...

kelly: the two of us could beat the five of them if we were on a team by ourselves.
meliss: well, yeah.

kids talk about race&stuff

found this video on a blog i read sometimes.
i really don't have anything to say because it speaks for itself.

or rather, the children speak for themselves.

only an electric blanket to sleep with

yesterday we were joking about my heating blanket and the fact that my co-worker expressed concern for my safety. she is worried that in the middle of the night, a mouse could come and bite the cord. [upon hearing this, i almost died of laughter. inside. of course]

the following conversation took place:
mary lou: yeah... i didn't want to talk about it before, but there have been studies done about the damage of electric blankets. especially for single women. b/c there's evidence that they can destroy eggs, and as women we have a limited supply. i mean, eventually we run out when we're old.
kelly: well jeez, i wouldn't need the heating blanket if i had someone ELSE to sleep with.
melissa: jeez! single women are the ones who would WANT to use a heating blanket!!!!
kelly: YEAH, jeez! the world is against us.
.....
melissa: mary lou, are you and sam ever cold at night?
mary lou: no, never.
kelly: must be nice. we're both always freezing.

a whole new meaning to the idea of XBOX

this morning one of my best students, araceli, got to class before the rest. we were chatting about her oldest son who's in 3rd grade. apparently, he's been having some trouble at recess with a naughty girl in his class. he's also struggling with other students who brag about all the nice things they have, and being rich.

araceli is trying so hard to teach him the important things in life. she explained to him about keeping away from those bad girls who will get you in trouble even when you aren't doing anything wrong. she also told him about one of their friends who died really young and left behind a 10 year old son. in conclusion, araceli shared this little tidbit of wisdom:

"life is like an xbox game. you have to get through the bad parts to get to the happy parts"
