i had a strange experience yesterday. i went with two other girls to IKEA and upon arrival, they suggested we split up [halleluia!!] i was wandering around contentedly for about 15 minutes when my cell phone rang. my friend asked if i wanted to meet her because she was lonely.i wasn't. i could have happily walked around alone for 20-30 more minutes.
so what does this mean? am i anti-social? do i not like my friends? am i a loner?!?!
it got me thinking about how my year in japan formed me for the long term. seriously, i did so much alone last year. biked to school alone. went to the mall alone. toured hiroshima and miyajima alone. grocery shopped alone [sometimes annie and i would bike to the store together, but we always walked around by ourselves and met at the checkout counter]. ate at restaurants alone every once in a while. visited cassie alone. i even went to kansai airport and left japan alone.
i'm thrilled with my living situation and adore seeing my bff every single day. and i'm so grateful to finally have my own friends in the area. i would be miserable living alone again... and then sometimes, every once in a while, i realize that i don't hate being alone. and i'm grateful to japan for teaching me how to feel this way.
but i still occasionally worry about myself just a little.
