my humble attempts at a tribute

the past two days i've had the privilege to spend time with a really special lady: irene nelson. i will always hold easter weekend 09 in my heart of hearts. my cousins have written tributes to grammy and i can't be outdone. obviously, words [especially on a blog] cannot convey what she means to me and the influence she's had on my life. but i'll try my hardest.

for as long as i can remember, grammy, you have been the foundation of our family. your farm and your house are a safe haven, a wonderland, and an amusement park all in one. the creek, the heifer barn, the tin roof, the muddy pond, and the upstairs bedrooms have provided endless hours of fun for all your offspring.

you are full of stories, big words, and encouragement for my life. you are the perfect hostess.

i remember when i was a teeny tiny girl and you were sleeping with me while i stayed at your house for the weekend. we were in bed, listening to grandaddy snoring away in your room.
somehow, you always keep your sense of humor. you always keep fudge pie fresh for dessert. you always keep the beds made and the table set gorgeously.

from you i've learned how to polish silver, how to keep in touch with friends forever, and how to write a good thank-you note.

i love looking through all your old photographs, all your corn-house treasures, and all your beautiful dishes. i love sitting in your living room around your recliner listening to you talk and laughing at your hilarious tales. i love holding your hand when we pray and being with you in the kitchen.
remember when i told you "i moved grandaddy's medicine so the kids wouldn't get it?" way back when i was the youngest kid?! for some reason that stands out in my memory. maybe because it was such an obvious precedent for what i have valued all my life. thanks for remembering that story...

you've taught us all the value of education, the treasure of family, and the importance of a good meal around the table.
you taught me how to be respectful, how to make a solid rootbeer float, and how to work hard.
and because of you, i know how to get out of a mile-long driveway on wintry nights!

driving home tonight, i thought about the fun i've had at four winds farm with rebecca, jimmy, eric, teddy, jennifer, and allen. then i remembered what a joy it was to show emily and joey all our old haunts. those days are some of my favorite ever. your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are testimonies to the lessons you've taught by your quiet example [because you always keep your usual silence...]

i love you grammy, and i'm so thankful for you. <3>
