what's for lunch?

yesterday i noticed a magazine on the kitchen counter. i thought it was a leftover subscription from the girl who lived in our house before melissa and i moved in. then this morning the title, "haunted by hunger," caught my eye so i started reading.

later, i realized that the magazine was mine.

by that point, i'd already read the entire feature article, which is about 2 americans [a writer and a photographer] who visit a village in northern kenya. they live with a family and eat exactly what the family eats. basically all the family's nourishment comes from world vision's food program. i was fascinated: by the love so freely given by this malnourished african family, by the photos of tiny children, by the perspective gained by the american writer, and by my own almost constant focus on food. watch the 12 minute video here.

the story was mostly sad. sweet, touching, but mostly just sad.

then, i read the follow-up article on the next page, about a community 50 miles away. the town [with the help of world vision and USAID] started an irrigation system which has helped them create a successful farming community. lots of the kids are in school because they have world vision sponsors.

in 2006, the community donated seven tons of grain to kenyans suffering because of drought.
