i have finished my first year as family literacy instructor. last week we had graduation parties and goodbye hugs galore. summer program starts in less than a month, but it's still quite an accomplishment.
all teachers know that a big part of the job is being a willing learner. my students teach me something every day. and the job itself has taught me a lot as well. here's a sampling...
- body language matters a lot: you can really tell if they get it by how their faces are looking at you
- if even one student looks confused, you gotta explain in another way, using totally different words/ examples.
- kids' language acquisition depends a whole lot on their parents attitude, ability, and encouragement.
- adults are super fun to teach because you can talk about real-life stuff with them [taxes, friendships, traveling, boys]!
- it's hard to share a classroom with another teacher. balancing independence and team-work is tricky!
- adult literacy and ESL are both things i support and encourage. even though kids are definitely my forte, i have found incredible joy in educating adults.
i consider myself SO blessed to have gotten this job and am excited to see what the next year will bring. i HOPE to have all the kinks out so i can be a truly excellent teacher*
